Homeschool: Letter Z, Noah’s Arc and Zoo Theme

So I’m way behind in blogging through my homeschool days. To be honest I’ve really fallen out of my schedule completely. I struggle with over committing our days. So here I go once more attempting to keep us home at least 3 of the 5 week days. Learning to say no is a major issue because I really love all the mommy adult talk time so I have to try to find a balance.

My kids loved talking about Noah’s Arc and singing the songs but Timmy especially loved making his own Arc.

I just took clip art animals, clothes pins and playdough and let him play. He was determined to get every animal in the boat.

We have a toy Noah’s Arc so we spent some time talking about the different animals and about how Noah sent out the dove to see if it was the right time to get off the Arc.

20141105-152516-55516465.jpg

Timmy traced the Letter Z in his letter book. He is awesome at tracing.

20141105-152844-55724417.jpg

He colored his Z treasure piece and glued it to the treasure map. This boy loves glue and he’s actually great at it. And he’s starting to color inside the lines!

I have this mini twister that we used to review circles and colors. Then we turned the cards over and played memory basically.

20141105-153516-56116350.jpg

For snack we made Noah’s Arc with bananas as a boat and animal crackers .

20141105-153640-56200998.jpg

We played pretend zoo and Timmy and Grace were my caged animals 🙂

20141105-154032-56432033.jpg

We used tuning forks to learn about sound. I wasn’t sure Timmy would like this because he has sensitive ears but he really liked it.

It’s weird because as I’m going through the week it doesn’t feel like we do much but when I sit down to actually write it all out it seems like a pretty full week, right? The weather has been awesome these past few weeks so we have started spending a lot of time outdoors. I really hope I can get back in my routine but I’m thinking the holidays are going to be a little (a lot) bit distracting.

On top of our regular schooling we are going to be starting “The Truth in the Tinsel” it reviews alittle scripture from the Jesus birth story and you make an ornament to go with the story. I’m excited about this because I want my kids to grow up knowing that Christmas is hardly about Santa and presents and mostly {all}about the blessing oh our Lord and Savior.

Veterans Day Crafting

We had some friends over to learn about the American flag. The moms did a great job with their flags lol. You can tell in the picture that Timmy did his by himself. I think it’s more fun to see what they come up with. Timmy was more of a confederate flag kinda guy I guess lol.

20141105-145620-53780333.jpg

After we colored a little picture to mail to cousin Jon to thank him for his service.

20141105-145708-53828600.jpg

This flag snack is delicious! Seriously. Looks simple and it is but it is amazing. I’ve kind of been dieting so it’s possible I’m biased bc of my lack of sugar these days. It’s just a graham cracker with cool whip, blueberries and strawberries. Yum! The kids really liked “cooking” these.

Homeschool: Letter A, Circles and Apple Theme

This week was so fun! I’m noticing that I’m falling out of our schedule I set and I don’t know if that a good or bad thing yet. There’s a constant battle between wanting to be out and seeing friends and family or staying home and sticking to our schedule.

I’m really loving the Wee Sing songs and the kids love them too. Timmy picks the words right up and Grace thinks she does. This week was, ” O Be Careful” and I really love what it teaches. Now it’s one of Timmy regular songs that he sings all day.

We started the week adding the Letter A to our treasure map board and practicing some Letter A handwriting.

20141002-171832-62312017.jpg

We used play dough to make circles and then reviewed all our shapes on the white board.

We are a little behind in our bible study but that’s ok, better to grasp it than to rush it I think. So this week we continued talking about the creation story and did a craft for day 3 and 4.

20141002-172012-62412155.jpg

20141002-172010-62410869.jpg

Now I’m embarrassed to admit but my kIds have never eaten apples. I guess I just always thought they were too hard for them to eat. Well I was wrong, way wrong! Both kids begged to eat apples every day this week. And there goes little grace walking around eating a whole apple like she’s big.

20141002-172240-62560619.jpg

20141002-172241-62561904.jpg

We ended the week with A Johnny Appleseed party. I had so much fun planning it. I planned the whole day around these three books:

20141002-172437-62677374.jpg

As the kids arrived I had them play with my apple cinnamon scented play dough and I made enough so that they could take theirs home. I have them cut up green pipe cleaners to make pretend apples.

20141002-172611-62771945.jpg

Then I read then the book about Johnny Appleseed. We measured their heads for their “pot” hats and went outside to plant our “appleseeds.”

20141002-173713-63433469.jpg

When we came inside we made handprint tracing apple trees with Pom Pom apples and a paper plate apple with a green handprint leaf & stem.

20141002-174057-63657389.jpg

20141002-174058-63658911.jpg

For the second book, “Ten Apples Up on Top” I put a basket of apples and let the kids play along with the book trying to balance apples on their heads.

20141002-174306-63786673.jpg

Then it was snack time! The idea was to read “How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” but by this point the kids were over it and wanted to just play. I made an apple pie, crockpot applesauce and apple granola. I cored out apples for the kids and poured apple juice inside with little straws. It was so cute.

20141002-174700-64020762.jpg

We finished the week adding the A to our letter wall and doing a review of the letters we’ve learned so far.

Homeschool: Review Week

This week because we loved all the gardening activities I extended the theme into 2 weeks. I also used this week as a review to see if what we were doing was working. Boy was I surprised! Timmy is a little smarty pants.

My favorite part of the week was when Timmy would randomly bring me and say, “Look mommy an X!” I was so impressed. All week if something resembled an X he was pointing it out. We practiced writing both X and G on the whiteboard and Timmy does really good with sounding out G.

We did our square treasure hunt. Then we reviewed all the shapes. He knows square, rectangles, circle, oval, triangle, heart and star, sometimes diamond. Of the shapes with lots of sides he calls them all octagons.

We did a flower craft and talked about all the parts of a flower and what they need to grow. I showed him how to put the parts of the flowers picture together and then scrambled all the pieces and I think he did an awesome job putting it back together.

Our plant update:

We started reading Genesis and we made these two projects for Day 1 and 2. I like projects like this where there’s minimal parent involvement because it’s fun to see what he comes up with.

20140920-091015-33015367.jpg

Sign Language is going so well. He is starting to use it during the day. He asked me if we were going to see friends at the same time making the sign for friends.

Sweet Grace tries to join in on all the learning. She loves to color {crayons are yummy she says} and she is a singing machine. She tries and almost does all the hand motions for Itsy Bitsy spider and where is thumbkin. She can point to her nose and eyes when you ask. She’s definitely watching Timmy closely.

For our Field Trip we went to the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. They had a Storytime and brought out a baby alligator and possum for the kids to pet. Then we walked around and saw panthers, bears, bobcats, turkeys, owls, snakes and we fed the turtles.

Next week is APPLES! I don’t know why I’m so excited about that. I’m even having and Johnny Appleseed Party at my house.

Homeschool: Letter G, Squares and Garden Theme

This week was a little hectic. Both kids had colds and it seemed like we had a lot of distractions. We had old friends pop in, the bug guy, the lawn guy and play dates. It seems like anything that takes me away from my schedule throws off everything after. My biggest set back is when I don’t keep up with my chores. I find it hard to do anything when the dishes are piling up. But regardless there was a lot of fun learning this week:

The best part of this week was our sign language lesson. I’m doing language as a center twice a week and Timmy just picked it right up. It was so amazing to see that little light bulb go off. He knows 20 words.

We sorted Pom poms by size and then again using tweezers. He totally understands size and sorting so I tried to have him sort by color. We definitely still have some work to do with colors. Right now he knows blue, green, purple and brown.

20140913-212801-77281000.jpg

My mom bought Timmy this Mickey Greenhouse and I knew it would be perfect for garden week. Timmy loved putting this together.

We are already seeing results and Timmy is so amazed by it every morning. In just 5 days this is what the cucumbers look like:

We read a story about Matisse for our artist study. The book was called The King of Color and I highly recommend it. After we cut paper into small pieces like Matisse and made a snail using his technique. I need to add more cutting to our days because Timmy loves to cut paper.

For the g on the wall we did finger print flowers all over to go along with the garden theme.

20140913-215713-79033497.jpg

On Thursday we skipped the library and had a play date. There was lots of crying in the beginning over sharing toys but eventually they were giggling and having fun playing with chalk, bubbles and play-dough.

20140913-220021-79221959.jpg

For Field Trip Friday we went to Botanical Gardens. Mrs. Wendy read the kids a flower story and we planted pumpkin seeds in toilet paper rolls. The boys were very interested in the centipedes and pine cones. Timmy learned how much fun it is to run and roll down a hill.

When we got home we did some more planting and seed exploration. This kept Timmy’s interest for a long time, maybe over an hour. We did a seed germination jar, seed counting in an egg carton and then I just have him dirt, water and a spoon and let him free. It was a little messy but worth it.

Timmy really enjoyed this theme so I’m going to extend it into next week. We were so into the gardening part that we did little to learn about squares and I want to spent more time on The Creation story. I’m quickly learning that I need to use pencil rather than pen.

Homeschool: Letter X, Rectangles & Treasure Theme

We are so excited for this first homeschool year! We chose God’s Little Explorers as our curriculum. For sure I needed a guide and Stacie Ann Nelson lays it all out in black and white. I know it’s not for everyone but I’m loving the bible aspect of this curriculum. Nothing is more precious to me then sweet little faces so excited to read the Bible.

Our daily schedule looks like this:
8 – Wake up, Eat, Get Dressed & Ready
9 – Bible Devotion, Calendar, Weather, Storytime, Songs & Instruments
10 – Play Outside & Snack
11 – Grace Naps & Timmy does his Themed Adventure, ABC’s & 123 work
1 – Lunch
2 – Storytime and Center-like Activity

We are going to use that schedule Monday through Wednesday. I try to include Grace in most of the days activities and do the concrete learning while she naps. On Thursdays we go to our library Storytime and visit Great Grandma and Aunt Jessica. I also want to reserve Fridays for fun field trips with our Mommy & Me Playgroup.

Here’s some of what we learned this week:

We practiced writing the Letter X and tested out our school desks.

20140906-150832-54512430.jpg

For music time we’ve been listening to the song of the week which was The BIBLE song and then we listened to a baby genius nursery rhyme cd. Their favorites were Baa Baa Black Sheep and BINGO. During snack time I turn on the classical music.

20140906-153841-56321957.jpg

Timmy made paper towel roll binoculars and then went on a treasure hunt for the Bible. Then he wanted to keep hiding the Bible for me to find and then that turned into a game of Hide and Seek. Turns out Timmy a little peeker. It was so much fun.

Homeschool: Springtime

This week we talked a lot about flowers and baby animals. I found a book at a consignment shop all about baby animals and it came with a DVD. It was about all the baby animals on a farm. Timmy loved it. It was real life animals not cartoon, so he kept trying hug the tv.

We started the week with a lamb craft. I always remember doing a lamb craft for spring when I was in school.

This craft came out so cute. I pre-cut the legs and face and then showed Timmy how to make a dot with the white paint. He was really into it.

20140407-095353.jpg

20140407-095446.jpg

20140407-095508.jpg

For a science activity we melted ice. First with our hands and then with salt. This was a big hit. I was impressed with it too. Of course he had to taste it even though I warned him not to.

20140407-100105.jpg

20140407-100136.jpg

20140407-100209.jpg

Timmy really enjoyed playing with the corn kernels and cooking utensils last week and he asked to do it again this week. When he was done playing we used a paper towel roll, a napkin, tape and the corn kernels to make a rain stick.

20140407-100935.jpg

20140407-101005.jpg

20140407-101029.jpg

20140407-101109.jpg

Timmy worked with bunny and puppy stamps.

20140407-101801.jpg

This week Timmy has been doing a lot of pretend play. It’s amazing for me to watch. He uses belts as fishing poles and goes fishing in the playpen. He also uses the belts as a lasso and tries to lasso his cars {and sometimes Grace}. He came over to me and offered me a drink of tea. He was drinking his tea and telling me how good it tasted.

20140407-102526.jpg

20140407-102550.jpg
Then I caught him in the playroom with his cowboy hat on and sitting on his horse yelling yeehaw!

20140407-102715.jpg

20140407-102758.jpg
And these two animals are always fighting. Rawr.

20140407-102949.jpg

Timmy made a bird feeder using real tools at a Home Depot event and the birds were already feasting last night. He was so amazed when the cardinal sat on the feeder. He was saying, “Eat dinner bird.”

20140407-103704.jpg

20140407-103748.jpg

20140407-103733.jpg

We went to Bass Pro to see their fish tank and it fit in perfect with baby animal week because they have about every animal you could think of stuffed all around the store. So we walked around for a little bit pointing out all the animals. Next time we are going to go in time for the fish feeding.

20140407-104355.jpg

To really celebrate spring we built a vegetable garden. Timmy was so excited. Pretty sure he thought we were building him a sandbox though. He was a big help breaking up all the dirt and watering the plants. Hope it works.

20140407-104735.jpg

20140407-104809.jpg

We did a mess free {my favorite kind}flower craft. I cut a flower shape and put it in a ziplock. Then I let him squirt different color paints into the bag. Then he squished the paint all around to color the flower. No clean up!

20140407-105034.jpg

20140407-105045.jpg

20140407-105059.jpg

We spent a lot of time outdoors in the sandbox and sprinkler, at the park and we went to the zoo and Magic Kingdom. It’s definitely spring time here!

Homeschool: Rainbows & Saint Patrick

This week lasted more like 2 weeks between the whole house getting sick and Great Grandma visiting.

Timmy’s language skills are really progressing. He is speaking in 3-4 word sentences now. He is also learning the concept of sharing, which is huge for him. He also started saying he was sorry without being told to, mostly to Grace of course. Timmy had a friend over and I didn’t have to yell one time. The two boys played for FIVE hours without fighting or anyone getting hurt. And they mostly played on their own. They had the most fun hiding in the closet and playing with instruments.

Here are some of this weeks activities:

I’ve always wanted to make a spaghetti sensory bin and I don’t know what took me so long because it was so simple. I just boiled the pasta with food coloring. Al dente is best so that it doesn’t fall apart when they play with it. I also added alittle olive oil to keep it from sticking together. Timmy wasn’t crazy about the texture and opted to use a fork to play with it. I let him add green sprinkles to it too. But in his mind he was feeding the “snakes” sprinkles. Everything turns to snakes lately. Grace was all about this activity, swirling it around her fingers and diving right in the bin. Not once did she put it in her mouth, only baby I know who won’t put things in her mouth {that includes baby food 😔}.

For this rainbow activity I cut out a cloud shape and strips of colored construction paper. First I had him glue cotton balls on the cloud, then he glued down the strips and then added the cloud to the bottom. I explained to him that this was a rainbow and we went over all the colors. He is pretty good at pronouncing all the color except orange. He did this project 95% on his own. I let him use the glue stick but I had to add more glue to make sure everything would really stick. I love how proud he is with his finished product.

The idea was to make shamrock stamps using 3 wine corks taped together. I did one to show him how it worked and the let him do his own thing. He got some stamped on his paper but then started using his fingers. I made the mistake of giving him a bottle of green glitter! & it was everywhere and of course it was his favorite thing. I explained to him that the shamrock represented the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that’s how the real Saint Patrick taught the Holy Trinity. Then we did the sign of the cross. This is something I didn’t even know myself. Teaching my kids is teaching me too.

While we were painting shamrocks, Grace was doing some painting of her own for the first time. I mixed the last of our yogurt with some green food coloring. She loved it but again not a drop in her mouth. Everywhere else yes. We had to get right in the tub after these projects.

This wasn’t theme related but a lot of fun. I put lentils, elbow pasta and corn kernels in a big Tupperware with measuring spoons and a funnel. This got real messy fast especially once the spaceship got involved. He played for 2 hours and the best part was he asked for the broom when he was done.

For this activity I painted right along side him. I think I had a little too much fun. I was showing him what I was doing on my paper and it was so cute when he started imitating my picture. He kept saying “look mommy a line.” I thought he made a really good attempt at painting a rainbow.

Last year we made this 2 liter bottle with cut up pipe cleaners. Every now and then I bring it out with a magnet and he loves it. It’s actually pretty cool. We also made a water and oil bottle with orange food coloring. I bought these alphabet magnets from a friend. They also click into a device that says the letter name and sound. Timmy loves when we get to the letter P, he yells peeeeeeeeee!

Homeschool: Circles

So this is my third attempt at starting some sort of preschool/homeschool environment for my kids, mostly Timmy of course. At first I was just winging it but it felt like nothing was getting done because there was nothing documented. Then I bought a curriculum from another homeschool mom but I’m not sure Timmy is ready for it so I’m going to start that in September. I just want to have fun with him with a little bit of structured learning. I think that happens everyday whether I try or not but I need to see it on paper and I really want my husband to see it too. He says he’s on board with homeschooling but I think he’s still on the fence about it. So I thought if I put it all on here, in a few months we could look back to see what worked and what didn’t.

This week was a lot of fun. Pretty sure we have circles down pat. What I think helped a lot was getting the kids dressed and ready for the day as soon as they woke up. Then we would eat breakfast. Some of his meals where themed all on their own like pancakes made into a snowman and cut up bananas.

After eating we did the calendar and weather.

Then we would read a verse from our daily bible and the story for the day. After we went for a walk everyday either in the stroller or bike with Grace in the ergo. When we got back we played in the yard. Then it was naptime.

When he woke up I would already have his lunch ready and his activity for the day set up. With lunches I just used a cup to make circle bread sounds simple but he thought it was cool.

On Monday we had snowman pancakes, read A Snowy Day and made a snowman with different shaped circles. This was Timmy's first experience with a glue stick. It was hard to get it away from him when we were finished. He did an awesome job and then we hung it in the playroom. When we played outside I made some fake snow that he got as a gift for his first birthday. >

Tuesday we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and made a caterpillar with the circles of our thumb print. This came out really cute but of all the activities I think learned the least from this one. To make up for it we practiced with a safety scissor for the first time and I let him use the glue stick again to put on the tree and leaf. When we went outside we went for a Circle Treasure Hunt. This was a big success!;

Thursday we made a lion out of a paper plate. He was very proud of the finished product. And the best activity was so simple. Different colored pompoms in Tupperware. He would count each one as he took it out and then would put them back by saying the color. I was so impressed. He mastered counting to 5 and sometimes counted to 8. He knew colors yellow, white and green sometimes purple.
