“Mom can you draw me a door?”
“Sure can Timmy.”
And then he sits there trying to open said door. I love this age!
Today my sweet friend looked at me as we both walked out of the library and said, “Where is your diaper bag?”
She had a fully packed and organized diaper bag. I also had a very nice little bag but I left it in the car.
My bag is somewhat see through, which makes it super easy to find things. It has no pockets or secret zippers but I don’t have a need for all that fanciness.
I breastfeed so there are no bottles or formula to pack. I also don’t bring snacks and drinks everywhere I go and yes my kids are sometimes thirsty and so we find the nearest water fountain. They survive. Mean mom I know.
When I go to a friends house I bring even LESS in my diaper bag, because sister if you can’t use your friend’s wipes that chick is NOT your friend.
My bag is recyclable, is yours? Yup when I’m done with my bag I toss it right in the recycle bin. You also can get them at just about any store and they are FREE! Nothing is free these days but this diaper bag sure is.
Now don’t get me wrong, some of those more traditional diaper bags are awesome and so cute. I had one once, when I was a new mom. But now if I had to worry about packing and restocking that huge bag everytime I left the house I would go nuts. It just adds another step to my get out of the house on time routine. As it is we take about 20 minutes from front door to pulling out of the drive way.
My diaper bag in all it’s glory…
This week was so fun! I’m noticing that I’m falling out of our schedule I set and I don’t know if that a good or bad thing yet. There’s a constant battle between wanting to be out and seeing friends and family or staying home and sticking to our schedule.
I’m really loving the Wee Sing songs and the kids love them too. Timmy picks the words right up and Grace thinks she does. This week was, ” O Be Careful” and I really love what it teaches. Now it’s one of Timmy regular songs that he sings all day.
We started the week adding the Letter A to our treasure map board and practicing some Letter A handwriting.
We used play dough to make circles and then reviewed all our shapes on the white board.
We are a little behind in our bible study but that’s ok, better to grasp it than to rush it I think. So this week we continued talking about the creation story and did a craft for day 3 and 4.
Now I’m embarrassed to admit but my kIds have never eaten apples. I guess I just always thought they were too hard for them to eat. Well I was wrong, way wrong! Both kids begged to eat apples every day this week. And there goes little grace walking around eating a whole apple like she’s big.
We ended the week with A Johnny Appleseed party. I had so much fun planning it. I planned the whole day around these three books:
As the kids arrived I had them play with my apple cinnamon scented play dough and I made enough so that they could take theirs home. I have them cut up green pipe cleaners to make pretend apples.
Then I read then the book about Johnny Appleseed. We measured their heads for their “pot” hats and went outside to plant our “appleseeds.”
When we came inside we made handprint tracing apple trees with Pom Pom apples and a paper plate apple with a green handprint leaf & stem.
For the second book, “Ten Apples Up on Top” I put a basket of apples and let the kids play along with the book trying to balance apples on their heads.
Then it was snack time! The idea was to read “How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” but by this point the kids were over it and wanted to just play. I made an apple pie, crockpot applesauce and apple granola. I cored out apples for the kids and poured apple juice inside with little straws. It was so cute.
We finished the week adding the A to our letter wall and doing a review of the letters we’ve learned so far.
This week because we loved all the gardening activities I extended the theme into 2 weeks. I also used this week as a review to see if what we were doing was working. Boy was I surprised! Timmy is a little smarty pants.
My favorite part of the week was when Timmy would randomly bring me and say, “Look mommy an X!” I was so impressed. All week if something resembled an X he was pointing it out. We practiced writing both X and G on the whiteboard and Timmy does really good with sounding out G.
We did our square treasure hunt. Then we reviewed all the shapes. He knows square, rectangles, circle, oval, triangle, heart and star, sometimes diamond. Of the shapes with lots of sides he calls them all octagons.
We did a flower craft and talked about all the parts of a flower and what they need to grow. I showed him how to put the parts of the flowers picture together and then scrambled all the pieces and I think he did an awesome job putting it back together.
Our plant update:
We started reading Genesis and we made these two projects for Day 1 and 2. I like projects like this where there’s minimal parent involvement because it’s fun to see what he comes up with.
Sign Language is going so well. He is starting to use it during the day. He asked me if we were going to see friends at the same time making the sign for friends.
Sweet Grace tries to join in on all the learning. She loves to color {crayons are yummy she says} and she is a singing machine. She tries and almost does all the hand motions for Itsy Bitsy spider and where is thumbkin. She can point to her nose and eyes when you ask. She’s definitely watching Timmy closely.
For our Field Trip we went to the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. They had a Storytime and brought out a baby alligator and possum for the kids to pet. Then we walked around and saw panthers, bears, bobcats, turkeys, owls, snakes and we fed the turtles.
Next week is APPLES! I don’t know why I’m so excited about that. I’m even having and Johnny Appleseed Party at my house.
My kids are so sweet. {they can also be monsters but mostly sweet ☺️}
Timmy is on the floor with his toy camera making kissing sounds trying to get the dogs attention so he can take their pictures.
We told him this weekend that Madison is his dog now and that he’s old enough to start feeding her and letting her out. He took it very serious.
Now I used to be a “dog” person. Not so much these days since they’ve decided that they are going to EAT the house. This is Grace hanging out with Madison in the homemade doggie door she made for herself…
We were outside and right now we only have one bike. We are hoping that Santa Clause will bring Timmy a big boy bike and then Grace can get Timmy’s tricycle {the price you gotta pay for being the second child} So for now they have to share and I was pleasantly surprised when I turned around to see this brilliant idea:
Whenever anyone gets hurt Timmy runs over to kiss it better. This is kind of random but only because he just did it to me. Then he gives you a big smile and says, “All better?”
These two are really getting so close. They fight a lot yes but they are best friends. Always looking for the other if one left the room. Always kissing and hugging. It’s so awesome.
This week was a little hectic. Both kids had colds and it seemed like we had a lot of distractions. We had old friends pop in, the bug guy, the lawn guy and play dates. It seems like anything that takes me away from my schedule throws off everything after. My biggest set back is when I don’t keep up with my chores. I find it hard to do anything when the dishes are piling up. But regardless there was a lot of fun learning this week:
The best part of this week was our sign language lesson. I’m doing language as a center twice a week and Timmy just picked it right up. It was so amazing to see that little light bulb go off. He knows 20 words.
We sorted Pom poms by size and then again using tweezers. He totally understands size and sorting so I tried to have him sort by color. We definitely still have some work to do with colors. Right now he knows blue, green, purple and brown.
My mom bought Timmy this Mickey Greenhouse and I knew it would be perfect for garden week. Timmy loved putting this together.
We are already seeing results and Timmy is so amazed by it every morning. In just 5 days this is what the cucumbers look like:
Both kids lived the fruit flowers snack.
We made a sunflower but first Timmy explored the sunflower seeds with his magnify glass. He really loves the magnify glass. I really want to get him a microscope.
I really had zero expectations for Timmy and handwriting but he is really surprising me. He was so proud of his g’s!
Timmy made flowers and planted a play-dough garden.
We read a story about Matisse for our artist study. The book was called The King of Color and I highly recommend it. After we cut paper into small pieces like Matisse and made a snail using his technique. I need to add more cutting to our days because Timmy loves to cut paper.
For the g on the wall we did finger print flowers all over to go along with the garden theme.
On Thursday we skipped the library and had a play date. There was lots of crying in the beginning over sharing toys but eventually they were giggling and having fun playing with chalk, bubbles and play-dough.
For Field Trip Friday we went to Botanical Gardens. Mrs. Wendy read the kids a flower story and we planted pumpkin seeds in toilet paper rolls. The boys were very interested in the centipedes and pine cones. Timmy learned how much fun it is to run and roll down a hill.
When we got home we did some more planting and seed exploration. This kept Timmy’s interest for a long time, maybe over an hour. We did a seed germination jar, seed counting in an egg carton and then I just have him dirt, water and a spoon and let him free. It was a little messy but worth it.
I am amazed just as much as Timmy with all these seeds sprouting. I find myself so excited to check their progress every morning.
Timmy really enjoyed this theme so I’m going to extend it into next week. We were so into the gardening part that we did little to learn about squares and I want to spent more time on The Creation story. I’m quickly learning that I need to use pencil rather than pen.
It’s very possible that my kids will grow up thinking vegetables come in the shape of a Popsicle… But at least they are getting the healthy goodness, right?!
Organic Carrots were buy one get one so now they are Popsicles.
Berry Carrot Popsicles
A cup of baby carrots, half a banana, a little orange juice, blueberries and raspberries. I steamed the carrots and then puréed them adding just enough orange juice to make it smooth. Then added the rest of the fruit.
The kids LOVED them, me on the other hand not my favorite.
My latest attempt of sneaking some healthy food in Timmy’s diet:
Quinoa Cookies
A cup of cooked quinoa, a cup of oats, diced banana, diced dates, 2 T brown sugar, 1/2 t cinnamon, 1/4 t salt. Mix together. Beat 2 eggs and add to mixture. Baked for 15 minutes on 350. Dabbed melted dark chocolate on too when they came out of the oven. Huge hit!
Veggie Berry Pops
Handful of kale spinach mix, a little orange juice. Blend in bullet. Add berries and a banana. We all enjoyed these.
We are so excited for this first homeschool year! We chose God’s Little Explorers as our curriculum. For sure I needed a guide and Stacie Ann Nelson lays it all out in black and white. I know it’s not for everyone but I’m loving the bible aspect of this curriculum. Nothing is more precious to me then sweet little faces so excited to read the Bible.
Our daily schedule looks like this:
8 – Wake up, Eat, Get Dressed & Ready
9 – Bible Devotion, Calendar, Weather, Storytime, Songs & Instruments
10 – Play Outside & Snack
11 – Grace Naps & Timmy does his Themed Adventure, ABC’s & 123 work
1 – Lunch
2 – Storytime and Center-like Activity
We are going to use that schedule Monday through Wednesday. I try to include Grace in most of the days activities and do the concrete learning while she naps. On Thursdays we go to our library Storytime and visit Great Grandma and Aunt Jessica. I also want to reserve Fridays for fun field trips with our Mommy & Me Playgroup.
Here’s some of what we learned this week:
We practiced writing the Letter X and tested out our school desks.
For music time we’ve been listening to the song of the week which was The BIBLE song and then we listened to a baby genius nursery rhyme cd. Their favorites were Baa Baa Black Sheep and BINGO. During snack time I turn on the classical music.
Timmy made paper towel roll binoculars and then went on a treasure hunt for the Bible. Then he wanted to keep hiding the Bible for me to find and then that turned into a game of Hide and Seek. Turns out Timmy a little peeker. It was so much fun.
We made a Treasure Map to track the Letters we learn each week. Timmy loves anything that involves glue.
This activity kept Timmy busy for a whole hour. I had him sort the paper clips by size and then I gave him a magnet to explore with. I was impressed with his sorting skills.
I put a large X in a plastic sleeve with hopes that he would create an X with his play dough but that didn’t happen. Even when I tried to show him how he was like, “Wow mommy great caterpillar!” And, “Oooo a helicopter!”
We twisted pipe cleaners together to make X’s and then we went fishing with a magnet. These also eventually turned into helicopters.
We went on a treasure hunt for rectangles. All I did was cut construction paper into rectangles and this was a huge hit. Of course he had to hide them for me too. I think I will do this each week for a shape activity.
On Thursday we went to Storytime and visited Aunt Jess and Great Grandma.
For Field Trip Friday we went to All Around Gymnastics Friday Free Play.
In his most sincere sweet little voice, “Mommy you’re pretty and you have a really pretty elbow!”
Umm ok thank you Timmy 🙂
